Gravel racing mixes long aerobic riding with repeated surges, short climbs and technical sections. Training needs to build both endurance and the ability to respond to changes in pace.
Aerobic base
Long easy rides form the foundation. Build them towards the duration of your target event.
Surges and climbs
Intervals with repeated short efforts, and over-under sessions around threshold, prepare you for punchy terrain and group dynamics.
Handling and kit
Ride gravel regularly to build confidence on loose surfaces. Test tyres, pressures and luggage in training, not on race day.
Fuelling
Long gravel events can mean hours between feed stops. Practise carrying and eating enough food.
