Where the course climbs and drops

Elevation along the course, from the 2025 course track. Hover or tap the chart to see the height at each point.

Based on the 2025 course track, kilometre by kilometre:

  • Km 0–3: a gentle drop.
  • Km 3–5: a rise of about 16 m.
  • Km 5–27: rolling, with short rises of 10–15 m around km 10, 14, 18 and 25–26, and drops around km 12–13 and km 20.
  • Km 27: a drop of about 18 m.
  • Km 30–32: the biggest drop of the race, about 45 m. Watch your quads here.
  • Km 32 to the finish: almost flat. With the descents behind you, this is where an even pace pays off.

Pacing and fuelling for Funchal

Pacing. The rolling first 27 km reward even effort rather than even pace. Don’t try to bank time on the big drop at km 30–32: running downhill hard costs your legs for the flat final 10 km. The predictor adds time for the climbs and gives some back on the descents.

Fuelling. Most marathon runners aim for 60–75 g of carbohydrate per hour, and more if they have practised it in training. The predictor’s emailed report and the fuelling calculator give you a gel timeline by kilometre.
