August Benedicto comes from Paniqui, Tarlac, and is one of the most consistent performers in Philippine long-distance triathlon. By 2018 he was already in his tenth year of IRONMAN racing.
He built his reputation in the Filipino and Asian elite categories, winning the Filipino elite men’s title at the 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines Asia-Pacific Championship in Cebu and the Asian elite men’s category at IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay in 2017, where he ran 1:26:55 for the half marathon.
In 2018 he lined up at the first full-distance IRONMAN held in the Philippines, in Subic Bay. Despite his electronic shifting battery dying on the final climb of the bike and a day of heavy rain, intense heat and strong winds, he finished fifth overall in 9:48:46, won the Asian elite category and was the first Filipino across the line.
In 2022 he won IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines in Lapu-Lapu, Cebu outright in 4:29:16. He came out of the water around 40th, worked his way up on the bike and passed the leaders on the run, in a field of close to 2,000 athletes from 46 countries.
In June 2026, aged 42 and now based in Ireland, August won the men’s race at the 10th Century Tuna IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay in 4:40:38. Starting the bike with a big gap to close, he emptied the tank over the 90 km and caught the leaders with about 5 km of the run to go. He was also honoured with the Bagong Bayani Award.
Alongside his own racing, August is a coach with Endurance Lab.
